Creation of the poster for Black History Month 2023 in Quebec.
“This 32nd edition of Black History Month, which will be grounded in the theme of ‘Out of the Darkness, Into the Light,’ reminds us of the importance of creating greater space for the diversity of Afro-descendant communities in all spheres of public life.” - Christine Fréchette, Minister of Immigration, Francization and Integration
The original piece that I made in 2020, titled 'Deconstructing Masculinity,' serves as a powerful critique of toxic masculinity. It delves into the intricate intersectionality of race, gender, and stereotypes, providing a nuanced exploration of the multifaceted experiences associated with Black identity. It's essential to recognize that Black identity is diverse and dynamic, resisting any attempts to be confined to a monolithic narrative.
As part of Black History Month, my poster was selected to be the official poster and was displayed in several public spaces in the form of billboards, calendars and postcards.
In 2023, I had the honor of receiving a commission from McGill University's Office of the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) (OPVPA) to craft two distinctive collages in celebration of Black History Month. This collaboration allowed me to weave together artistic expression and historical significance, contributing to the vibrant tapestry of events dedicated to acknowledging and honoring the richness of Black history in Montreal. The collages stood as a powerful representation of visual storytelling, promoting the events and inclusivity within the academic community.
